CALL FOR ENTRIES
2010 NEACJS STUDENT PAPER AWARD
We invite you to participate in the Northeastern Association of Criminal Justice Sciences (NEACJS) Student Paper Award, given in recognition of outstanding scholarly work by students.
AWARDS
Six awards are offered. The first place paper by a graduate student (masters or doctoral level) will receive $175 and the second place paper by a graduate student will receive $150. The first place paper by an undergraduate student will receive $125 and the second place paper by an undergraduate student will receive $100. The first place paper by a community college student will receive $75 and the second place paper by a community college student will receive $50. All winners will also receive a one-year membership in the NEACJS. Winners for each award MUST deliver their papers at the annual meeting of the NEACJS at Roger Williams University, Rhode Island on June 10-13, 2010 in order to receive an award. Winners will be notified by phone by the middle of May. The NEACJS will provide the winners with housing and will reimburse them for the student registration fee.
ELIGIBILITY
The competition is open to anyone writing on a criminal justice related topic. The student paper contest takes the students’ work out of the classroom and into the world of professional dissemination, like submitting for publication or presenting at a conference. The paper is in the public realm. Editorial assistance, therefore, is encouraged to make the paper as good as it can be, according to the norms and standards of our criminal justice professional culture. Participants need not be matriculated in a criminal justice program. A faculty member at the student’s institution must select and submit papers. No papers will be accepted if received directly from a student. Only one paper from a student will be accepted per year.
SPECIFICATIONS
Papers must concern a relevant criminal justice topic, and may be conceptual and/or empirical. Papers should be word-processed, double spaced, and at least ten pages in length (excluding references). Any standard academic format for the organization of text, citations, and references may be used. Identifying information such as the author’s name, email, college and program affiliation, student identification number, or home address and phone number should appear ONLY on the title page, so that papers may be evaluated anonymously. The second page of the manuscript should include the title and a one paragraph abstract. Students should submit their work to a faculty member, to screen the papers for quality and insure that they meet these specifications.
PROCEDURES FOR JUDGING ENTRIES
The Student Paper Committee (consisting of faculty members of NEACJS) will evaluate entries according to the following criteria: scholarly content, critical thinking, clarity of expression, and overall professionalism (including style and format). The Committee’s determinations will be final.
DEADLINE
Faculty members should email an attachment of the student’s paper by May 1, 2009 to: john.mockry@clinton.edu, in either .doc, .rtf, or pdf format. In addition, one printed copy (and an abstract), along with a cover letter stating the student’s name and email address, should be sent to the address below.
